The Pucarte and Marañón rivers

We started very early for a long trip in the skiff up the Pucarte River, stopping for a very comprehensive picnic breakfast. We saw a flock of beautiful blue and yellow macaws, and then took a hike around a lake to find the hoatzin, an intriguing bird.

We returned, stopping for a swim in black water within sight of black river dolphins. While taking a shortcut back to our main boat along the Yanallaquill Creek we had to cut through fallen branches to pass through the channel. During the heavy rain of the afternoon we watched from the Queen Violetta as a large group of black river dolphins put on a non-stop display. We finished the day with a presentation by the local shaman, moored by the village of San Regis.
